The Sierra de Gredos, declared a Regional Park in 1996, covers the south of Ávila province with over 86,000 hectares of mountains. It is 1 hour 20 from the estate, about 90 km, and the destination with the most elevation change in the whole area: here the plan shifts from a stroll to a mountain excursion.
What you'll find
- Candeleda, one of the most charming villages in the sierra, with a historic center and a good choice of restaurants.
- The Garganta de Alardos gorge, with natural pools and a waterfall, a popular plan in the warmer months.
- Hiking trails of varying difficulty, from accessible walks to demanding climbs to the highest peaks.
- A Starlight Reserve since 2020: skies with very little light pollution, ideal for stargazing.
A day for the mountains
With 1 hour 20 minutes each way, Gredos calls for a full day dedicated to the sierra, not a last-minute outing. For a group with different fitness levels, the Garganta de Alardos is the most flexible option: you can enjoy the water and the setting without completing a long route. Anyone after something more demanding has plenty of mountain trails, though it's worth planning them with enough time before nightfall.

- Bring several layers: the temperature in the sierra can be considerably lower than at the estate, even in summer.
- The Garganta de Alardos natural pools fill up early on hot days: it's worth going in the morning.
- For anyone keen on stargazing, the sierra offers some of the darkest skies in central Spain.
- The change in vegetation as the road climbs, from olive groves to pine forest and pasture, is noticeable within the drive itself, well before reaching the first villages.
Combining it with the rest of your trip
Being the farthest destination along with Cabañeros, Gredos fits better into a multi-day stay than a short weekend. Candeleda, with its historic center and choice of restaurants, is a good place to stay overnight if the group ever decides to extend the trip beyond a single day, though most estate guests manage it as a full there-and-back day. For anyone coming from a big city, the contrast in altitude and temperature with the estate is part of the appeal in itself.
