La Puebla de Montalbán is a town on the banks of the Tagus, 20 minutes from the estate, known for its historical heritage and the La Celestina Festival. Within its municipal area sit two of the lesser-known and most surprising monuments in Toledo province: Santa María de Melque and the castle of San Martín de Montalbán, very close to one another.
What to visit
- Santa María de Melque, the oldest surviving monastic complex on the Iberian Peninsula, with a church of Visigothic origin built next to an old Roman villa. Declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1931.
- The castle of Montalbán, in the municipality of San Martín de Montalbán, standing above a 100-meter gorge carved by the Torcón river, which acted as a natural moat. It belonged to the Knights Templar for part of the Middle Ages.
- The castle can be visited every weekend of the year, by guided tour only.
- La Puebla de Montalbán's historic center, with the La Celestina Festival as its main cultural event.
Planning the visit
The two monuments, Melque and the castle, are close enough to visit in the same morning. Since the castle tour runs on a fixed schedule, it is worth checking available slots before leaving the estate, especially with a large group. The setting is quiet, without the crowds of Toledo, making it comfortable for a group that prefers history without the hassle. La Puebla is also the gateway to the scenic route to Puy du Fou: the CM-4001 local road leaves from here towards Toledo, with the detour to the Barrancas de Burujón halfway along.

- Access to Melque is free and needs no advance booking to see the exterior and surrounding area.
- The ground around the castle is uneven, with the Torcón gorge below: not suitable for strollers.
- Combining it with nearby Malpica de Tajo makes for a castle route in the same morning.
The village, beyond the monuments
La Puebla de Montalbán has a pleasant historic center to stroll through before or after visiting Melque and the castle, with manor houses and an arcaded main square typical of the area. The La Celestina Festival, held on set dates in the municipal calendar, is the village's most important cultural event and it is worth checking whether it coincides with your stay. For a group that already knows Toledo and wants heritage with fewer people around, this area offers the same historical quality without the queues of Toledo's old town.
