The Méntrida Designation of Origin spreads across the north of Toledo province, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, about 25 minutes from the estate. Recognized since 1976, its flagship grape is garnacha tinta, grown in old, low-yield vineyards, often in the traditional bush-vine style that is becoming increasingly rare.
What you can do
- Guided winery tours, explaining the winemaking process and the land it comes from.
- Organized wine tastings, some paired with local produce.
- Direct wine purchases at the winery, often at better prices than in shops.
- Traditional vineyard scenery, a change from the estate's olive grove for a different photo backdrop.
An afternoon plan for the group
A visit with a tasting works well to close out a group day, especially organized for late afternoon before heading back to the estate for dinner. Each winery has its own hours and visit format, so it is worth booking ahead, especially with a large group. It also pairs well with a celebration: toasting with local wine adds a regional touch to any special meal at the estate.

- Untrellised bush vines are a distinctive feature of the Méntrida D.O. landscape compared with other Spanish wine regions.
- Some wineries offer lunch or dinner on site, with advance booking.
- The wine-growing area also stretches towards the border with Ávila and Madrid, at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos.
- September, with the grape harvest underway, is an especially interesting time to visit the local wineries.
- Some tastings can be arranged in English on request, worth mentioning when booking if the group is not Spanish-speaking.
- Comfortable shoes are still useful, since most tours include a short walk through the vineyard rows before the tasting itself.
- Autumn light over the vines makes for some of the best photos of the whole trip, second only to the estate's own sunsets.
An underrated plan
The Méntrida D.O. doesn't have the fame of other Spanish wine regions, which in practice means smaller wineries, more personal visits and fewer crowds. For a group that has already done Toledo and Talavera and wants something less well known, an afternoon of wine and vineyards is a change of pace that fits well towards the end of a stay. It also suits a group that would rather sit down than walk much, after an active day at the pool or in the countryside.
